I Haven't Read The Book.....

So I was actually entertained by the World War Z movie.

Some decent action, edge of the seat scenes, funny bits, no 'gore-fest' and figuring out the plot devices made for an enjoyable 2 hrs.

Let the flames begin.

Big Kitties

Took a field trip today to an 'Exotic Feline Rescue Center' in Center Point, IN today.  All I can say is OMG.  I've never been up that close to cats that large before.  I've seen them in zoos plenty of times but never up close enough that I could hear them purring or where they could hit you w/ 'spray' (which happens regularly).

I'm planning on taking the family there soon.

The Gov't Will Keep Us Safe

We need to close the 'Gov't Employee forgetting to put the monitoring bracelet on the dangerous parolee' loophole.
An ex-convict accused of killing a man shortly after getting out of prison under Illinois' revamped early-release program hadn't been fitted with an electronic ankle monitor, as he should have been, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The Associated Press.

Or maybe the 'Moron Governor letting dangerous criminals out of prison' loophole.

For the children.

If I Really Were an Insurrectionist/Terrorist/Traitor.....

like I've been accused of, I would be receiving huge checks as well as shipments of guns, nightvision and other military supplies from the gov't.

Instead the gov't is trying to tax me into poverty and disarmed.

Telling, isn't it?

Elliot Fineman: Animals Should Have a Long Slow Death...

instead of a headshot to end it quickly and humanely.

Yeah, all those bits about not opposing firearm ownership for 'legitimate purposes' like hunting?  Yeah. Big surprise, eh?

Anything relating to guns is 'fair game' to them in their quest for citizen disarmament.

The Paper of Making Up the Record

In another episode of 'Fun w/ Statistics', the Old Grey Hag, the NYT plays fast and loose w/ the truth to push their 'save the children' meme.  In this case they 'indepth examined' 'child shooting deaths' across an number of states, determining that medical examiners are bought and paid for by the NRA to lower accidental shootings for their own nefarious ends.

Here's an example:
In four of the five states — California, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio — The Times identified roughly twice as many accidental killings as were tallied in the corresponding federal data. In the fifth, Minnesota, there were 50 percent more accidental gun deaths.
That (GASP!!!!!) 50% INCREASE!!!!  Oh NOES!!!!!  SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!!

Look at the chart beside it.

4.

Yep.  4 over a period of 13 years for a TOTAL of 12.

While every child death is a tragedy, even if the NYT numbers are correct, that means that the numbers have STILL dropped over the years as the mis-identification would have been going on well before '99.

And the anti's still oppose education in lieu of attempts to make firearms more complicated, dangerous and expensive.

Gun Ownership Dying blah blah blah

In Illinois, the number of FOID cards (owner licenses) has increased 25% 33% in the last few years from 1.2m to 1.6m.

Suck on it Anti's.

Book Review: The Rhodesian War

Continuing my current obsession w/ African Bush Wars, I picked this up through Amazon.  The Rhodesian War: A Military History by Moorcraft & McLaughlin gives a good overview of the military
actions during the conflict and some of what occurred in the immediate years following.
One are of particular note is that they also give a description of the military forces, training and equipment of not only the Rhodesian forces but also of the various opposing armies in the field.

It doesn't delve into detailed political or social histories but focuses primarily on the military aspects.  It also doesn't get super detailed into any of the particular units involved. What this is good for is as and excellent overview of the campaigns and actions involved in the war that led to the creation of Zimbabwe.

One of the sections that really caught my attention was near the end of the 'International Intrigues chapter.  It stated that Nigeria and Tanzania were preparing forces to enter the war, Mozambic had over 500 troops already in country, Cuban forces were in planning and South Africa had long had combat units in Rhodesia and on the border.  What kind of war would have erupted had Mugabe not 'won' the election w/ such a large margin?  How would the USA, NATO, Russia and China reacted? That would make for a good alt. history story.

Overall an excellent reference for the Rhodesian war.  Highly recommended.

Next up: Cuban Diary by Che Guevara

In the queue:
Africa @ War: Selous Scouts  by Peter Baxter
Gunship Ace: The Wars of Neall Ellis  by Al Venter
Portugal's War in Angola: 1961-1974 by van der Waals, W.A.
